How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

TPMS Light on Dash

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System is a crucial safety feature of your vehicle, alerting you when tire pressure is low so you can maintain optimal performance on Brunswick and Montrose roads. In some cases, the tire pressure light may remain on even after you’ve inflated your tires. If your TPMS light is on, reset it to ensure maximum safety. In this guide, the Ken Ganley Kia Medina service team tells you how.

How to Reset Your Tire Pressure Light in Different Ways

In most cases, the TPMS light will automatically go off once your tires are inflated. If the TPMS light is on even after your tires are inflated to the proper level, here’s how to reset the tire pressure light using the most common approaches:

  • Driving at or above 50 mph for at least 10 minutes will often reset the sensor, so the light will be off the next time you start the vehicle.
  • Turn off the vehicle but keep the key in the “on” position. Then, push the TMPS reset button — usually found under the steering wheel–until the light blinks three times. After you see the flashing tire pressure light, release the button. Start the engine, and give the vehicle about 20 minutes to reset the sensor.
  • If these methods are unsuccessful, inflate all tires to 3 PSI above the suggested amount, including the spare tire. Then, deflate them. After all air has been let out, inflate them to the recommended level to reset the TPMS light.
  • You may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery if the above approaches fail. Turn the vehicle off and use a wrench to disconnect the positive battery cable. Then, turn the vehicle on and honk the horn for around three seconds to expel any remaining vehicle power. Now, you can reconnect the battery, and the tire pressure light should be reset.

What to Do If You See a Flashing Tire Pressure Light

If you see a flashing tire pressure light on your dashboard panel, it’s typically an indicator that the battery powering the sensors needs replacing. It can also be a sign of a malfunctioning sensor. This is an issue best left to professionals, so schedule a service appointment at Ken Ganley Kia Medina as soon as possible.
